Attending car shows has always been a passion of mine, and I harbored a longstanding desire to one day showcase my own impressive vehicle. When I stumbled upon this truck, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “If not now, then when?” Its rich history made it the ideal canvas for a transformative project.
Discovered on Hemmings for a reasonable $25,000, I was astonished by the truck’s exceptional condition given its price tag. The paint remained remarkably intact, and there were no glaring mechanical issues – just the need for a rejuvenation. Originally crafted by Boyd Coddington for his son, the truck’s pedigree was irresistible to me. As a fervent fan of American Hot Rod, the prospect of owning a creation from Boyd himself was a dream come true. Upon acquiring the truck, it became evident that a stellar drivetrain was the primary requirement. While LS swaps are undeniably appealing, I opted for the LT4 for its distinctive allure.
The truck’s paint exudes a distinct ‘90s vibe, evoking a wave of nostalgia that resonates deeply with me. Thus, I was committed to preserving its period-correct aesthetic. However, the existing 16” wheels posed a limitation in accommodating the substantial brakes I envisioned. Determined to address this, I sought to re-imagine the original Boyd wheels as 18” variants – an endeavor made possible by Shift, overseen by Boyd’s son.
In keeping with the truck’s vintage charm, I sought a retro-inspired car stereo system reminiscent of classic ‘90s builds, albeit with modern, high-end components. The resulting audio setup not only enhances the driving experience but also complements the roar of the engine with its impeccable sound quality.
Taking the truck to Cars and Coffee events never fails to ignite excitement, particularly among fellow enthusiasts of my generation. Witnessing their reactions, especially upon peering beneath the hood, serves as a gratifying affirmation of the truck’s status as a genuine crowd-pleaser.
