In the dynamic realm of magazine publishing, we regularly cross paths with a plethora of creatives, from visionary photographers and wordsmiths to adept editors. Our affinity for these imaginative minds, especially those wielding pens, pencils, or paintbrushes, knows no bounds.
Our ongoing interaction with an exceptional individual first began at the C10 Fall Revival a few years ago. Michael Whitley, the visionary behind Johnny’s Speed Shop, not only piqued our interest but also unfolded a fascinating narrative. Much like many of us, Michael’s artistic journey commenced in childhood, with a focus on art during his high school years. What sets him apart, however, is his journey from artistic passion to a full-fledged career.
Growing up with a love for trucks, Michael delved into customizing them post-high school. His automotive odyssey began with a ‘91 2-door Blazer, which he not only lowered but also equipped with a bitchin stereo system. As the years rolled on, Michael embarked on a project with his dad, resurrecting a 1965 C10 that had been parked for two decades. Before his father’s passing, Michael fulfilled a poignant moment, taking him for a ride in the truck they had worked on together.
Upon reaching the milestone of turning 50, Michael decided to establish Johnny’s Speed Shop, a fitting homage to his father, who played a pivotal role in cultivating his automotive interest. In just a few years, Michael, with the unwavering support of his wife Tracy, carved a niche for himself on the East Coast, leaving an indelible mark in the truck scene and cool artwork domain. Following his participation as a vendor at the C10 Fall Revival, Benny Carelock, one of the event’s organizers, approached Michael with an intriguing proposal—to showcase his artwork on a skateboard.
In 2022, Michael translated this concept into reality, crafting his inaugural deck during the C10s in the Valley and C10 Nationals. The positive reception, flooded with compliments and inquiries about its availability, prompted many to express their desire for custom work. Since that pivotal moment, he has lent his artistic touch to create award-winning skateboards for prominent events like The Truck Gathering, C10 Fall Revival, Hoosier Truck Rally, Maggie Valley, C10s in the Valley, and C10s at the Beach.
Expanding his horizons, he has ventured into personal merchandise, featuring his bespoke artwork. With an uncanny ability to turn a blank canvas into a cherished piece of art, Michael invites those interested in custom projects or eager to explore his offerings to connect with him at www.johnnys-speedshop.com.
